Meat makes the world go round is a research documentary that I made together with my fellow students Yildau ter Beek and Timm Donke. During a field trip to Athens we traced back ‘the path of the pig’, to find the origin of the animal that is used for the famous Greek souvlaki dish. We found out that most of the pork meat in Athens comes from the Netherlands, and mainly from the area around our own residence Eindhoven. The fact that we travelled to Athens to eat pork from our own region as the local dish, fascinated us. What is ‘local food’ exactly? Where are you a local? Who owns a certain dish? Triggered by questions about locality, identity and cultural exchange through food, we interviewed many people in Athens in Eindhoven to find out what these concepts mean to them and how they think about meat.
